We all know that dogs are widely used for their fine sense of smell to detect a multitude of illegal substances such as drugs and fireworks. However, most people don’t know that dogs’ super powered noses can be used to detect bed bugs as well. These canines are specifically trained to sniff out the scent of this common household pest.
While accuracy by traditional approaches of detecting bed bugs and their eggs is in the 40%-60% range, the accuracy of canine detection can be in the 90% range.
Traditional methods of bed bug detection can take from 20 minutes to an hour, however, inspections performed by trained dogs and their handlers can range from 2 to 15 minutes!
