Roaches are adaptable to almost any environment including your home or business. Roaches pose a danger to the health of human beings because they carry disease pathogens including salmonella, streptococcus, E. coli, hepatitis B, and cholera. When diseasing carrying roaches come into contact with food or personal objects, contamination almost certainly will occur. In Southern California, there are four commonly seen species of roaches: Oriental, American, German and Brown-banded roaches.
Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches are shiny and blackish-brown in color and measures up to one inch in length. Although male Oriental cockroaches flaunt large wings that cover most of their body, these roaches do not fly. Oriental roaches prefer cool, damp locations such as basements and sewers. They crawl around toilets, bathtubs, sinks, radiators and pipes while scavenging for food.
American Cockroaches
The American cockroach is a flying water bug that can grow in excess of two inches in length. Although American cockroaches live primarily outdoors, a change in climate or lack of food supply can cause them to move indoors. When American cockroaches are indoors, they are drawn to food storage and preparation areas in search of sweet foods, and decaying material.
German Cockroaches
German cockroaches are small, and light brown in color and can grow to approximately 3/4 of an inch in length. German roaches are found throughout the world and are the most common household pest, infesting more homes and businesses than any other species of cockroach. They scavenge and consume a wide variety of foods, including decaying material. German cockroaches are fully winged, but are poor flyers.
Brown-banded cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches are light brown in color with two bands running across their abdomens. They measure approximately ½ of an inch in length and are winged. Brown-banded cockroaches tend to avoid water sources and prefer dry and warm locations such as pantries, and cabinets. Brown-banded cockroach infestations can pose serious health risks and are vectors for dangerous bacteria and protozoa.
