Raccoons

Raccoons are stocky mammals about 2 to 3 feet long weighing up to 30 pounds. They are distinctively marked with black patches over the eyes resembling a mask. They are heavily furred and have alternating light and dark rings around their tails. Raccoons are nocturnal animals that are extremely well adapted to urban and suburban environments where they often den in backyards, beneath decks, the spaces beneath houses, and even attics.

Raccoons eat both plants and animals including all kinds of fruits, berries, nuts, acorns, corn, grains, fish, frogs, snails, insects, turtles, rabbits, and the eggs of ground-nesting birds. They frequently scavenge from garbage cans and pet food left outside overnight. Raccoons can do damage to gardens and to homes. Females in search of nesting sites may rip off shingles, fascia boards, or rooftop ventilators to get into the attic. Doors covering crawl spaces are sometimes damaged in an effort to den beneath the house. Raccoons are carriers of rabies and are known to carry a number of diseases and as well as parasites.
