Fleas
Fleas are blood-seeking parasites that attached themselves to the skin of their hosts. Adult fleas are approximately 1/8” in length and reddish in color. Fleas are capable of jumping long distances and have three sets of legs. The cat, dog, and human flea are the most common types of fleas in Southern California.

Female fleas lay eggs on the hair of the host. Eggs can drop off of the host onto carpets, bedding, and furniture. The eggs will hatch into larvae within 14 days, the larvae feed on organic matter found within cracks and crevices. Within weeks larvae enter a pupa stage and then turn into blood-seeking adults.
Fleas typically establish large populations where pets are present. Pets suffering from flea bites frequently scratch themselves. Using an Insect Growth Regulator (e.g. Flea collar, Flea Shampoo) on your pet can be very effective in reducing flea populations in your home.
